Message from the president

Hope everyone had a great Christmas!!  In preparation of the new year and exciting things happening with the guild, please take a moment to print out and fill out the attached survey and bring it to the January meeting.  Don’t worry, we will also have copies at that meeting.  Don’t feel like you have to answer all the questions, we are just trying to get an idea of where your interests and talents lie.  We want you to be happy and interested and active in our guild and hopefully this will give us a start as to what you are interested in and what you would like to see in the future. Also, at the bottom of the survey is a place for comments.  Please use it.

You can even fill out two sheets—one with your interests and include your name,  and one with gripes without your name.  We just want to hear from you.  Thanks for taking the time to give us your feedback.

Donna

 Welcome

The meeting was opened by Vice President Rhonda Hughes.  The minutes of the last meeting were accepted.

Sunshine and Shadow

Ann Jesperson’s son-in-law is doing poorly.

Programs

December –The holiday supper was graciously hosted by Georgia.   The food was great and the ornaments were greater.  It was really nice to have so many personally crafted (how’s that fancy wording for home-made) ornaments this year.  Don’t forget, we are waiting for you to share your patterns, Peggy’s for the “Triangle Stuffed Snowman” is attached.

January-  The program will be presented by Shawnna Hoffman, as a trunk show of personal quilts with a story on how quilting has helped in recovery through personal struggles and the vagaries of life.

February -  Barbara Thomas/ Ruby Jane’s Retro Fabric; Garland - she will do trivia and games about quilting.

March -Joan Crumroy who will speak about creating quilted banners.

Raffle quilt

The Christmas morning raffle quilt was drawn on 12/21/10.  Holly, one of our own, was the winner.

Next year’s raffle quilt will be called “Honoring our Quilting Heritage”.  The background will be purchased by the guild, but the rest of the blocks will come from members stash.  There are a bazillion blocks in this quilt, and members are being asked to volunteer to complete at least 2 each.  The faster you sign up, the more choice you will have.  (You know the last people will get stuck with the most difficult ones.)  Contact Maryln, Jeanne T., or Barbara for more information.

BOM- Be A Star Gazer

Two patterns for the January BOM, the “Clean-up” star block and the “Dandy” quilt star,  http://quilterscache.com/T/TheDandyQuiltBlock.html.

Each month we will draw 2 block patterns for you to choose from, for the next months BOM.  At the end of the project we should have enough coordinated blocks for a great star quilt.

 Treasury:

Membership dues of $24, are due at the January meeting.   We will also have a sign-up sheet and collection of fees or deposits, for the March guild retreat.  More information on the retreat will be presented at the January meeting.

No Time To Quilt

We are quilters.  We love fabric and playing with it.  Sometimes life and/or attitude gets in the way.  How can we get around this and be happy with ourselves?  Here are a few ideas on ways to keep up with your outside commitments and still have time for quilting and to overcome your reluctance to use your stash:

  1. Too many new projects on your mind competing with charity and UFO’s?  Why don’t you devote one week a month to charity work, one to UFO completion and 2 to those great WIPs (works in progress) and WHIMMs (works hidden in my mind).

  2. Too much time spent at the end of the year on gift production?  Take the 25th of each month and use it to work toward getting things done before the clamor of necessary activities at the end of the year.

  3. So many things going, how do I decide what to do?  Bite off little chunks at a time.  Create a Fab Four list .  List 4 projects you would like to work on, and only work on those.  If you finish one, replace it on the list and work on those 4.

Or

Create a 10 item list (Power of 10) and work on each project only 3 hours before moving to the next.

  1. Overbooked?  Do something “quilty” for at least 10 minutes every day.   Ex). Cutting, arranging blocks on your design wall, string piecing, tidying your sewing area.

  2.  Don’t want to cut that piece of gorgeous fabric…or that one either or…. If a fabric is too special to use in a quilt, you need to make a quilt that's more special. Only make things you’ll enjoy, and enjoy using the nice fabrics in them.

  3. Keep a UFO list and when you finish one, move it to the top.  This way you can instantly see all of your successes!

  4. Like the fabrics you pulled for this quilt?  Keep looking through your stash, you may find another you love!  Every time you handle and sort through your fabric, new ideas and memories come up.  (Besides it’s fun, and what’s the use of hiding it away and ignoring it.)  This might also help with curbing the buying impulse (or not, and show you what you are missing and should buy).

  5. How about orphan blocks?  Do you like to try out new techniques or test block patterns before you make a quilt?  Set aside a couple of fabrics to do these
practice blocks so down the road you will have enough trial blocks to do a sampler.

There are lots of ways to work in time for playing and using your goodies.  Anyone else have some to share?  Send them in, and I will add them to the list.

Many of these ideas came from the “Stashbuster’s” yahoo group.
