Hats for Cancer Patients

Come Rain or Shine Hat

SIZE:  The pattern is made for a head size of 23".  Measure the circumference of your head and alter the pattern slightly if necessary.

CUTTING OUT:  Cut out the crown ("C") piece ten times.  Place brim ("D") on fold line of double fabric and cut out twice, or four times for a double brim.  Add a 1/4 seam allowance on all edges.  Note:  If you don’t add ¼” seam allowance, it makes a smaller hat, but that’s OK too!

SEWING:  Stitch five crown pieces together, stitching from the lower edge to the point.  Press seams open an top-stitch close to seamline.  Repeat to make another crown.  Place crowns together, wrong sides facing; pin around lower edges.  Stitch together around lower edge.
Stitch side seams of brim and press open.  For single brim, turn under outer seam allowance and top-stitch.  For double brim, stitch two brims together, right sides facing.  Turn to right side and press edge; baste inner edges together.  Stitch brim to crowns, right sides facing. Press allowances up into brim after clipping and then top-stitch along seams.

Add ¼” for seam allowance to the pattern, although I have made many without the seam allowance just so I could get a smaller hat.

Add a cute button or ribbon or bow, but make sure everything is washable.

Make the top one color and the lining a different color, flip up the brim and sew on a decorative button.
